BMR can be calculated using a BMI scale which will give you a fairly accurate reading for your body. Alternately you can use a BMR calculator or App. These are generic based on your body height, weight and other factors. Using a BMI scale can really help because you can monitor the BMR regularly which is very important.

Once you know your BMR you need to add activity calories burned daily. This isn’t the type of activity you get from hitting the gym 3 times a week. Only use the activity you are consistent with. If you are just looking for an estimate then you do not need to get fancy. However, if you are looking to lose a moderate amount of body fat this needs to become a daily habit. To do this you should get a fit device like FitBit that will actively monitor your activity. Using this on a daily basis can take the guesswork out of the entire process. It can also submit the data to your smartphone health app so you can have everything in one place.

How To Make A Diet Food Plan
Once you know your total caloric budget for the day, then you can make a diet food plan. Let’s say for example you ended up with 1800 for BMR and your daily walks burn another 300 calories. So you know your daily maintenance calories is 2100. From there you can begin to make a diet food plan that I like to call a daily caloric budget. How you spend this caloric budget will be somewhat based on your fitness objectives. If you are planning to lose body fat then you need to set a daily deficit from your daily caloric budget. If you are bulking up then you need to plan how many calories to exceed your daily budget.
A Diet Food Plan To Lose Weight
Most people use the word diet to indicate that fat loss is the objective. To lose 1 pound of body fat you need an accumulation of a 3500 caloric deficit over a set number of days. Most people will spread that out over a week and aim to lose 1 lb of body fat per week. It makes it a simple calculation of 500 daily caloric deficit. So for the above example of BMR + activity that gave us 2100 daily calories burned, the target would be to consume 1600 calories per day. The reason I like to use a fit device with a smartphone calorie tracker is so that I can see if on a day where I might have been more active and burned more than 300 calories I likely will feel hungry. Having this on-going information can really help plan better for each day. Rather than having a wild swings in the activity and the diet food plan being rigid at 1600. Making the diet more flexible with the activity will lead to less hunger and less chance of deviating from the weight management plan.
