Everyone wants to know how to lose weight fast without exercise. While it is possible to lose weight fast without exercise, usually weight loss and exercise go hand in hand. I will break it down how it is possible to lose weight without exercise.

The human body is very simple. Feed it more than it needs it stores excess as energy called fat. If you feed it too little it will reduce its fat by burning it for energy. The process of reducing fat is more complicated than this, because you have to watch out for muscle atrophy.

To know how much to eat to lose weight you first need to know what your metabolic rate is. How many calories does your body burn while doing minimal activity. For myself when I finally figured this part out was about 1900. For me to lose weight I would have to consume less than 1900 calories per day, or 13,300 per week. I prefer to measure daily, but if that is hard then you can still manage to do this with a weekly average.

Once you know this number you need to determine how fast you want to lose weight. The rule of thumb is that for every 3500 caloric deficit your body will consume about 1 pound of fat. If I wanted to do this over a 7 day period, the easy calculation would be to create a 500 daily caloric deficit and that means I would eat 1400 calories per day. This would cause me to lose 1 pound of body fat per week. This would be about as extreme as you should take it because that is already a 26% deficit.

Metabolism and Starving

The reason you do not want to exceed about 20% daily deficit is that after a number of days your body will start to determine that there is not enough food to support your body structure. Of course this happens gracefully because the body is very adaptable. A few things will begin to happen. Firstly, you will start to feel tired as your body’s way of keeping you from burning more calories. You will naturally not feel like doing much activity, might even want to sleep or nap more often.

If this continues, your body will begin to reduce its metabolic rate. So for my example of 1900, the body will find ways to get that number down. Making you feel tired is one of them. It is basically trying to match up your activity with its available energy (food) without tapping reserves. This is commonly referred to as starvation mode. With the decrease in activity it decides you don’t need as much muscle mass so it will begin to reduce that, which is known as muscle atrophy.

This is something you want to watch out for which is why I do not believe in fast weight loss. The thought of eliminating all the body fat in one week sounds great, but it is completely unrealistic let alone possible. Attempting it will likely have some bad repercussions so I highly recommend staying away from this method.
